Marines- Commando training and exercises |
These pages cover some of the time I spent in the Royal Marines. I could go on and on for pages about this but I will avoid boring you. I have just added a few photos with a description. This is a tiny insight into what we got up to during Commando training and subsequent exercises as it was not often the case that I could carry a camera around. Many of the photos are actually frames from videos which were recorded with a cheap video camera in poor conditions and so the stills are poor. Hopefully you can just about work out what is going on. Photos of the arctic skiing and survival course are on a separate.

This is me practicing abseiling to gain entry to a building through an upper window from the roof. | ![]() |
One of these is me doing a 200 foot abseil. This technique is used to get commandos into areas where helicopters can not go - or on the roof of a building.

All commandos are taught unarmed combat. Here, one is having a knife taken from him before disabling him. | ![]() |
In this frame, a wrist lock is applied to the enemy before booting him in the stomach to wind him and get him onto the floor; at that point he is likely to be strangled.

Here I am about to go on a beach raid with one of my favorite weapons (to the left on the floor) - the GPMG. This powerful belt fed machine gun can kill a person over a mile away. | ![]() |
This is me coming out of one of the many tunnels on the endurance course. This is effectively a 9 mile assault course to test stamina, endurance and courage - as some of the tunnels are flooded. This is one of the many Commando tests.

Here I am about to be inserted into a flooded pipe on the endurance course. I need to rely one one person pushing me in and another pulling me out as the pipe is very narrow and totally submerged. | ![]() |
On completion of the tunnels, pipes, lake and almost vertical hills, the weapon is inspected by one of the training team to ensure I have kept it clean because after a further 4 mile run I will have to fire it. At this point I remember wishing the rifle was loaded!

I have just been gassed and have come out of the gas chamber. The green suit is an NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare suit). | ![]() |
This is the next person coming out of the chamber. It is pitch black and we had to do physical exercises, change mask filter and with the mask off - repeat name, rank, serial etc. This person must have has a long name as he has inhaled quite a bit if CS gas. |
